Welcome to

swap shop

Welcome to our version of Wonderland!

We have over 3,000kgs of carefully curated fabrics, trims, buttons, patterns and much, MUCH more!

Sewing and crafting need no cost the earth. Without any new resources being used, you can find almost anything you might need for whatever project has inspired you, or find inspiration from seeing something in our collection that you can see what it wants to become.

We love zero waste and repurposing off-cuts, left-over bias binding, or your great aunts collection of buttons salvaged from old dresses... whatever crafts you love, this is the place to find the materials you need, or the home for extras you have.
Wide variety of fabric pieces perfect for craft projects
Patchwork cotton themed prints, hand-dyed and block colours.
Fabric 'scraps' and offcuts perfect for crafts and fibre art.
Buttons, Buckles & Domes
Measured lengths of knit and woven fabrics for dressmaking
Zips of all lengths and types
The 'Swap Shop' works by collecting donations from crafters just like you, as well as from local designers and manufacturers. Our volunteer team then spends many (MANY!) hours curating the collection and making it easy to browse. Anyone is welcome to browse our collection in person by appointment, or during our regular open hours Thursday-Saturday 10-4pm. We also take inquiries through our Swap Shop Request Form and are happy to courier items outside Dunedin (in compostable packaging).

Pricing is based on the idea of 'equal value exchange'. This means you can donate materials from your own collection (swapping items you don't have a use for, for those you do); donate your time (time-banking) alongside our regular volunteers; or give a cash donation. We have a good idea of the equivalent value of items second hand and can negotiate with you the best option that works for you.

Love sewing, but hate the cost of materials? Love finding great vintage trims, patterns, buttons, and prints, but don't have time to scour every op shop searching? Looking for just the right colour a piece to patch your jacket, or finish your quilt...?

How to Shop for Haberdashery Items

Do you have fabrics, patterns, buttons, half-finished-kits-a-relative-gave-you that you have no time to use or space to keep holding onto?  If you are you keen to 'de-stash', we can help. We will treasure your items, and help them find new homes where they'll be used and bring joy.

How to Donate Haberdashery Items

Updated for COVID-19 restrictions compliance

1. Complete our easy item request form or contact us with a description of what you're looking for, or the general area of textile crafts you're interested in.
2. We will send you photos and details of items that fit your description.
3. Make your selection.
4. Complete payment online through internet banking; or make a time-pledge*.
5. Non-contact pick-up from our studio; delivery to you (within Dunedin); or couriered to you (additional cost applies)

*Due to physical distancing needs, we are unable to redeem time swaps (volunteer help) in exchange for items. You can still pledge your time, and we can arrange a time with you once we've beaten the bug and the need for restrictions end.
Updated for COVID-19 restrictions compliance

1. Get in touch and arrange a time, and choose from dropping off or picking up make a time.
2. Make sure all your items are clean (e.g. haven't gone musty in storage).
3. Non-contact drop items off at our contact-less 'delivery point' at our studio; or we'll arrange with you safe pick-up from your place (Dunedin addresses only).

Enjoy the extra space your have available!
